il buco pizza comes in generous squares. It's thin-based and filled with flavour. At the risk of sound incredibly clichéd, I really can't believe it took me so long to try it, I've been depriving myself. All il buco pizzas are made fresh every day. On Johnny's recommendation, we tried the patate e salsiccia, with comforting flavours of potato, rosemary and Italian sausage. We also munched on the flavourful broccoli e gorgonzola; a wintery and surprisingly spicy option. Our favourite was probably the calzone, so much lighter than any I've ever tasted before, and packed with mushrooms and spinach and ham. Yum. We also had a chat to Johnny about his free range rotisserie chooks. He only sells the very best chickens, birds that have never seen the inside of barn. He cooks them to order. He bastes them in duck fat. They sound utterly incredible. One more thing, coffee. Johnny serves Coffee Supreme, and my dad stops by at il buco every single morning for his daily coffee. That says it all I think.

I highly recommend Il Buco for the best pizza slices in Auckland City. We include this as a tasting on our Ponsonby Gourmet Walking Tour as it is a real favourite for local Aucklanders and we want to show off our best foodie delights to visiting guests.

The quality of the product is always exceptional and Jonny and his team are so easy to work with. Thanks to Il Buco we had a very successful six weeks at our Pop Up Café and lots of happy customers got to try freshly cooked Il Buco pizza by the slice in a unique location!
